HIP SURGERY

Made-to-measure hip prosthesis

Every patient is unique, and so is their hip joint. Does this mean a hip replacement is necessary?
When conservative treatments are no longer sufficient, hip replacement is an effective alternative.

Why choose a made-to-measure hip prosthesis?

In the vast majority of cases, a standard hip prosthesis is perfectly adapted to the morphology of our patients. There is a very wide variety of models of hip prosthesis to adapt to the morphology of the femur of patients undergoing surgery.

However, certain morphologies can complicate the fitting of a standard prosthesis. These may include :

  • Severe congenital anatomical deformities, such as constitutional bone disease,
  • Certain hip dysplasias,
  • Extreme sizes (abnormally small or large femurs),
  • After-effects of fractures.

These situations remain relatively rare.

Are there any real benefits to opting for a made-to-measure hip prosthesis?

Design and manufacture of the prosthesis

The creation of a made-to-measure hip prosthesis relies on precision technology.
A CT scan with a 3D reconstruction of the hip is performed. Measurements are taken taking into account both of the patient's lower limbs. A model of the hip is used as a reference to design the stem of the prosthesis.
Biomedical engineers design a unique implant, adapted to the patient's bone structure. Corrections can be made by the surgeon.

Procedure

Before the operation, a personalised plan is drawn up by the engineer and your orthopaedic surgeon. The surgical procedure then follows several stages, which are the same as for a standard prosthesis:

  • An anterior approach to the hip (this is the technique we recommend, but other routes may be used)
  • The cup (prosthetic acetabulum) is inserted into the pelvis using the usual technique
  • The stem (custom-made in this case) is fitted using a technique that is completely identical to that for a standard stem: the preparation rasps are passed through and then the final stem, which is impacted (in the case of a cementless stem), is fitted
  • We usually use a ceramic-ceramic or highly cross-linked polyethylene ceramic couple.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Who can benefit from a made-to-measure hip replacement?

Anyone with a hip with an atypical morphology, a modified hip...

What tests are required before the prosthesis is manufactured?

A programming scanner for accurate modelling of the hip and planning.

Is recovery faster than with a standard prosthesis?

No, recovery is guided above all by the approach used, the patient's muscular quality, the complexity of the operation, and the intrinsic recovery qualities of each patient.
